Olivum Bardolino
Olivum Bardolino is hosting a weekend entirely dedicated to this prized product: nine olive oil producers will showcase their finest offerings, from extra virgin olive oil to cosmetic applications. Visitors will be able to take part in guided tastings and discover the flavours of the region at the DeGustibus food and wine stands, featuring traditional dishes from the Lake Garda area.
Cultivated for centuries in the Lake Garda area, the olive tree took on fundamental importance as early as the 7th century AD. An edict from 643 attests to its value, imposing penalties on anyone who damaged these trees in the surrounding villages.
In the Middle Ages, Garda oil was already renowned for its superior quality and its high economic value compared to other oils. It was used with excellent results both in cooking and in medicine, although its consumption as food was reserved for the few: suffice it to say that, in the early Middle Ages, 4–6 kg of Garda oil was equivalent in value to a large pig.
During the Renaissance, human intervention helped to shape the agricultural landscape, transforming the slopes into sophisticated terraces. These structures still characterise the area today, known since 1968 as the ‘Riviera degli Ulivi’ (Olive Tree Riviera).
Over time, the reputation of Garda olive oil has grown steadily, placing Garda PDO olive oil among the top five Italian PDO olive oil productions. Its olives grow in a unique environment, nestled between lakes and mountains, which enhances their qualities.
The updated programme will soon be available on the event’s official website.
